THE EMPRESS'
NEW JEWELS
SINGER/
SONGWRITERS
I don't know
about you out there but some times music is a perfect soundtrack
to writing , or an aid to setting a mood for delving deep and
dredging up those thoughts and sentiments we are trying to
recreate on the page. Here, I'm being indulgent and sharing with
you some of my current favourite singer/songwriters, sheer poetry
to the ears. Now all I need are some guitar lessons and I can
conquer the world! ;)

JEWEL
|
With
a name like that, how could the girl not be a poet? Jewel
still hasn't cracked the UK, but is huge in the States
and has also sold more than a million copies of herpoetry
collection 'A night without Armor'. I would highly
recommend Jewe'ls latest CD, 'This Way' to the
uninitiated, it's both rockier and more country than her
previous two and altogether more grown-up. A haunting
voice singing beautifully crafted,clever songs.
I dropped her an email once, still waiting....

LUCINDA
WILLIAMS
|
This
is country music for those, who like me have always been
scared by it! Seriously, this could just convert you! The
lyrics are sassy, cool, honest and her voice is full of
feeling. Great story telling, she makes it all sound
effortlessly simple. 'Essence 'is hermost recent CD and I
also recommend 'Car Wheels on a Gravel Road'. AND I stood
next to her in a bar once! ;)

DAVID
GRAY
|
Mr
Gray really came to the fore in 2000, with 'White
Ladder', when with great success he added a more
contemporary electronic sound to his traditional acoustic
folk. His lyrics are heartfelt ,bittersweet and
confessional, creating some real gems of songs. A spine
tingler! I can't say enough good stuff about this bloke.
I'm looking forward to seeing him live in December.

SHEA
SEGER
|
Brilliant.
Shea is a quietly self assured, young Texan, who I
believe now lives in London. Taste too! ;) The May Street
Project successfully covers a number of musical genres
and is full of references to love, life and growing up in
the South. 'Clutch' and ' The Last Time' are classic
pieces of songwriting. An amazing debut album. Smart and
gritty, yet totally appealing.

SUZANNE
VEGA
|
She
doesn't need much introduction really! But if you are new
to Ms Vega, get hold of her greatest hits album. Her
lyrics are incredible , delicate poetry, whilst tackling
a wide range of often difficult, subjects. Just
beautiful.

PAUL
WELLER
|
This
guy can sure write songs! Since his days with the Jam and
the Style Council, Mnsr Weller has displayed his
sensitive side with fantastic tracks like, 'You Do
Something to me', 'The changing Man' and 'Sunflower.' His
soulful, earthy vocals are a treat for the ears. The
albums 'Stanley Road' and 'Wild Wood' come highly
recommended.

KIRSTY
MACCOLL
|
Kirsty
was a woman with talent, class and wit. Her catchy songs
are brimming over with her unique brand of humour and
view on life.; real life. .Just fantastic. Her Best of
album, 'Galore' is a must. I was lucky enough to meet her
once, don't think I managed to say a lot though! RIP
Kirsty.

TORI
AMOS
|
I
have always admired Tori's brave and honest songwriting.
She's never afraid to be different, or tackle taboo
areas. I love some of her quirky lyrics. I hear she's now
settled happily in Cornwall. My favourite albums are
'Under the Pink' and 'Little Earthquakes'
